Eyebrows are a vital part of the appearance of your face. Their shape, thickness, color and texture all play a part in the overall look of your face. Contouring or thinning the eyebrows can alter the way the eyes look and can also create extra room for the application of make-up.

Some people may not be happy with the consistency of their eyebrows and would like to change them so that they look even across the brow. Some people would like to see more of an arch to their eyebrows and attempt to alter the way in which it curves.

The desire to shape and control the hair that comprise your eyebrows is one of the main reasons behind why people choose to pluck them. Plucking eyebrows is a relatively safe beauty task as long as you don’t take things too far and make it a habit that ends up damaging the hair follicles. There have been many horror stories of people who have plucked and plucked their eyebrows to be left with patchy or disappearing eyebrows.

One of the reasons you may want to pluck your eyebrows is to make your eyes appear larger. By framing them with a cleaner expanse, the eyes are given a larger frame of reference.

There is a right way and a wrong way to pluck your eyebrows if you wish to retain the healthy growth that you started with. This article is not a tutorial on how you go about plucking eyebrows – there are plenty of those available online. The main thing to keep in mind is that you should only be touching those stray eyebrow hairs that are not on the eyebrow ridge.

In other words you should be removing hairs that sit under the natural arch of the brow. Try to take them out one by one following the direction away from the nose – so, from the center of the face outwards.

Many people get way too enthusiastic with the whole plucking concept and wind up with a brow area that has been completely devastated. By removing too many hairs at once or by ripping them out in any direction, the delicate hair follicles can be irreparably damaged and eyebrow regrowth after plucking will either be hampered or impossible.

Give your brows a chance to recover, work a little bit at a time. If you need to cover up a mistake or there is a sign that your eyebrows are becoming sparse you may want to take out a soft pencil and begin coloring the brows so that they appear to be fuller than they actually are. This may simply be a temporary measure while you are waiting for your eyebrows to grow back into shape.

If you are concerned that poorly plucked eyebrow hair will not grow back as fully as it was previously there is some good news. The eyebrow hair will regrow if it is a one-off botch job that was performed manually using tweezers. Such a job is unlikely to damage the hair follicles from which your eyebrow hairs grow.

If the hair removal was performed with an electrical epilator the news may not be so promising. Epilators are not gentle when it comes to hair removal and the damage to the hair follicles could be permanent. This may mean that you may very likely be left with sparse eyebrow hair or bald patches in the eyebrows.

The regrowth of eyebrow hair is not a quick process. In fact it can take up to 2 months for plucked eyebrow hairs to grow back to the point they were at before they were plucked. Similarly if you are concerned that the quality of the hair, i.e. that the hair will grow back thinner or thicker or darker or lighter, is going to change as a result of the plucking. This is not the case. The eyebrow hair that regrows will come back as the same quality hair that was always there.

All of the above information assumes that the plucking is not part of a long-running routine of eyebrow plucking. If you regularly have your eyebrows plucked there is a good chance that the eyebrow follicles have become damaged over time. Eyebrow hair follicles are a very sensitive part of the body and are susceptible to becoming damaged and if they are damaged they will never be able to produce hair again.

Remember, the way you pluck your eyebrows can have a significant effect on the eyebrow hair follicles. Quick plucking motions should be made and the plucking should be carried out in the same direction to which the hair lies to minimize the trauma.

Everyone is different and each person’s body is going to react in a different way to whatever action is taken to it. Some people may have a greater tolerance to eyebrow hair plucking than others, some may lose their eyebrows completely after only having them plucked the one time. It is always best to seek the advice of a medical professional who is qualified to examine your specific circumstance and give you advice based on that.
