There are many reasons for eyebrows to become sparse or lose their definition from medical conditions and treatments to self-damage through over plucking. The result is an eyebrow that does not quite make the statement you’d like it to.
A temporary answer to the problem of poorly defined eyebrows is to apply a makeup product such as eyebrow powder or a pencil. This is a task that has to be conducted every day and may yield poor results, depending on how proficient you are at applying your makeup and filling in your own eyebrows.
An alternative solution that may be available to some people is the option of eyebrow tinting. This is a process that is not readily available through salons in all parts of the country but some cosmetic professionals do offer the service. Note this warning issues by the state of Massachusetts.
There is also the cheaper and more temporary option of at-home eyebrow tinting products in kit form.
The way in which the salon procedure works is that the cosmetologist first protects the eyes by placing a shield or mask over them. The skin around the eyebrows are then also protected with a coating over the skin with petroleum jelly or a similar product. The dye is then applied to the brows by the technician. It is left in place for around 10 minutes before it is wiped off and the treatment is complete.
What does eyebrow tinting do?
Just as with hair tinting, eyebrow tinting involves the application of dye to the hairs in the eyebrows. It is a quick procedure that will alter the color of the brows to give them a fuller, more luxurious appearance.
How long will the eyebrow tint last?
Salon applied eyebrow tinting is referred to as a semi-permanent solution. This means that is won’t have to be reapplied every day like a temporary solution such as eyebrow powder or a pencil but it won’t last forever.
You can expect your tinted eyebrows to last for around 3 to 4 weeks. This is a little less than you would expect tinted hair to last but this is because we tend to wash our face more frequently and the face can also be rubbed and brushed more often by the hands.
Expect to renew your eyebrow tint at the salon every month.
A home applied eyebrow tint may only last for a day depending on the strength of the product you use. Some of the better tinting products will give you a better result and can last as long as a salon-applied tint.
Reasons To Tint Your Brows
Someone with fair hair will benefit from tinted brows. Getting the job done right will define the shape of the brow and frame the face.
Removes the requirement of applying makeup to your eyebrows every day. This is a great solution when going on holidays.
If you already have strong eyebrows a brow tint will enhance their shape.
Reasons Not To Tint Your Brows
If you have thin brows an eyebrow tint will only stain the skin between the hairs to give the illusion of fuller bows. This stain will fade after only around a week leaving you with thin eyebrows that are now darker and more obvious than before.
Tinting poor quality or badly shaped brows will only exaggerate their imperfections.
If done poorly the brows can have an inconsistent look that may result in a heavy or misshapen appearance.
The products used to perform the tinting task have not been approved for use due to the dangers involved. If somehting were to go wrong there would be little or no recourse.
Dangers of Eyebrow Tinting
The first thing to understand about eyebrow tinting – and it may appear to be an obvious statement – but you are dealing with a very sensitive part of the body. The tinting products contain chemicals that can damage the eyes if it were to get into them.
Not all states in the USA allow beauty salons to offer eyebrow tinting due to the dangers involved and there are no dyes that have been specifically approved by the FDA for the tinting of eyebrows. In fact, the following statement has been issued by the FDA on the subject, “There are no color additives approved by FDA for permanent dyeing or tinting of eyelashes and eyebrows.”
The following is a copy of the 2008 document issued by the FDA where the above statement is made: Use Eye Cosmetics Safely.
The tinting products that are used for eyebrows contain the same ingredients as those used in hair coloring products. This means that chemicals such as peroxide and ammonia are going to be placed close to the eyes.
If the tint were to get onto the skin surrounding the eyebrows it can cause irritation which might result in inflamed skin. In extreme case the skin might become blistered with skin loose the result. This is why petroleum jelly should be smeared around the brows before the tint is applied.
When eyebrow dye comes in contact with the eye it can cause inflammation and swelling in minor cases and even blindness in extreme cases. Those people with sensitive skin and people who wear contact lenses can experience the more severe reactions.
The following story from England’s Daily Mail is an example of the dangers involved when eyebrow tinting is not performed properly or when allergic reactions take place.
How much does eyebrow tinting cost?
You can expect to pay between $10 and $30 for the process and a good quality tint will last for around 4 to 6 weeks before it has to be repeated.
If you prefer to do it yourself at home you can expect to pay between $15.00 to $35.00 for a tinting kit. These at-home kits may contain anywhere from 20 to 50 applications and the results will last for at least 2 weeks before having to be reapplied.
Does eyebrow tinting look natural?
It all comes down to the color selection and matching it to your hair color and complexion. A shade that is slightly lighter or darker than your head hair is most suitable because it will look more natural than eyebrows and hair that matches exactly.
A simple rule is to try to keep similar shades together. So if you have light colored hair use a lighter shade of eyebrow tint and if your hair is dark, use a darker dye.
Will eyebrow tinting cover gray brows?
Most eyebrow tints should be effective for covering up gray brows. The results, however, are variable. Some people have reported very positive results when they have tinted their gray eyebrows while others report that there has been little or no change.
What are some examples of good eyebrow tinting kits?
There are a number of well respected eyebrow tinting kits that are suitable for use at home. Remember that these products all contain dyes that, while safe to use around the eyes, can still cause damage if it were to get into the eyes. Follow the directions for use no matter what product you buy.
